Nourish Conference
A conference to empower women in the food industry.

Duration: 7 Weeks
Shelley and I both love food a lot, and think there should be more people celebrating the women in the food industry. Women in the food industry have experienced many obstacles from sexual harassment to people calling them “difficult” for not being agreeable to even facing another layer of racial prejudice for women of color. We thought something that was so beautiful about the women in the food industry was that they formed a community amongst themselves and supported each other.
For this project, we decided to design for a fictitious conference named Nourish. Nourish’s intent is to celebrate women who face prejudice and share their recipes of success. It takes place in the summer of 2022, in the food utopia of San Francisco.
WORDMARK
Inspired by (the now defunct) Lucky Peach magazine, the bold wordmark can live on its own strongly when required but also quickly become inviting and lively when the shapes and illustrations start to come into play in the tittle. This is particularly useful for future conferences, which can be modified to fit different city names. The wordmark also can live in a square — coming in handy for those social media squares.
I drew up these early iterations of the Nourish lockup (as shown below). We went forward with the bottom left one as it reflected the tone of the conference better.
PROCESS
We created a visual language out of different forms and colors to represent the nourishing summer produce. This language can be both visually expressive and functional, used to create illustrations when brought together and different patterns when pulled apart.
A key focus when designing the conference was to make sure the system worked on different scales to create more variety: An abstract pattern for large scale and a smaller pattern for a smaller scale.
